Letter from Boston University to Russell Ewell, evangelist with the Boston Church of Christ
September 14, 1987.
Mr Russell L Ewell, Jr, Evangelist
The Boston Church of Christ
PO Box 313
Boston, MA 02117
Dear Mr Ewell:
I am sorry to inform you that after very long consideration, the Religious Life Council of Boston University voted to affirm the actions stated in our letter of August 19, 1987 to Dr Baird. I believe that you and Mark Fedor had opportunity for full explanation of your position and intentions. Until we find some compelling evidence that your leaders and members will conduct themselves by the guidelines by all other campus religious groups, we must inform you that Church leaders who are not Boston University students will be banned from residences and other properties at the University.
The action clearly does not limit any Boston University students in the practice of their religious faith so long as they abide by the standard regulations of the Office of Residence Life and the Code of Student Responsibility in the Boston University Student Life Book. I inform you of this action with great sadness. It is extraordinary and very uncharacteristic of the long history of Boston University in the practice of the widest religious toleration. In view of the continued unacceptable behavior of your students and leaders, we find no other alternative.
Very Sincerely,
Robert Watts Thornburg
Dean of Marsh Chapel
